Rats
Rats can cause immense damage to food stuffs and buildings. They can gnaw through almost anything they come in contact with, from electric cables to plastic piping, insulation in the home, heating systems and plastics. Rats can breed throughout the year but given ideal conditions they can produce between 600 - 700 offspring in their life.Did You Know?
- Adult rats can squeeze into your home through a hole as small as the size of a five cent coin.
- Rats can live for up to 18 months, but most die before they are one.
- Rats have strong teeth that allow them to chew through glass, cement, wire, aluminium and lead.
- Smell, taste, touch and sound help direct them to their food sources.
Mice
A mouse will eat almost anything, but it prefers grain, seeds, or sweet material. Mice can live in buildings all there life especially in City Suburban areas, they will live mostly in shrubberies, among plants, weeds, garden sheds or even basements. Mice are most active during the night and this is when they will do most damage, but are occasionally seen during day time. Did you know?
- Female mice can give birth when they are two months old and are able to have babies 6 to 10 times per year.
- Mice have to build their homes near sources of food because they like to eat 15 to 20 times per day.
- Mice can live in a lab for up to two years, but usually only live for about 5 months in the wild, mostly because of predators, such as cats and foxes.
- Mice are good jumpers, climbers and swimmers.
- House mice, like other rodents, do not vomit.

Squirrels
Being a rodent with large, sharp incisors, squirrels are capable of causing serious damage to houses and woodlands, parks, etc. With such rampant expansion of populations, the Grey Squirrel is now considered a pest, and many rural control programmes are in place across Ireland. Did you know?
- Squirrels come in a variety of colours from pure black to pure white and all shades in between.
- Squirrels are typically 8"-10" long and 12 to 24 ounces in weight.
- They are mainly active during the day. They do not hibernate but will typically spend long hours in their nest during the cold winter months.
